169 – Course Diaries: Utrechtse Golf Club De Pan w/ archivist Ernst van den Doel

2023-01-27T11:50:51+00:00January 27th, 2023|Course Diaries, Podcasts|

Our first course diaries episode from 2023 comes from the world renown Utrecht De Pan. One of the finest inland courses in continental Europe and the product of Colt's genius, we got to sit down with club archivist and neurologist Ernst van den Doel. As well as the club and course we also talk about the evolution of golf in The Netherlands / Holland, the primitive game 'Colf' which is still played in bars around The Netherlands today, and the game more generally. Huge thanks of course go to FootJoy as our series sponsor for helping make this [...]

Tour Journal: Utrechtse Golf Club De Pan

A continued blog piece to coincide with our filming releases in The Netherlands... in partnership with - Day 2 - Utrechtse Golf Club: 'De Pan'   Spirits were in the sky until approximately 5 km outside of Utrecht. The hour-long journey through the fairly anonymous Dutch motorway network had passed quite quickly, as we recounted the highlights of our day at Eindhoven, with Sam reminding the others in vivid detail how well he had played on the back nine to secure the win. Bruce was at the wheel when suddenly a light flashed up on the dashboard, warning that the [...]

Netherlands Series: Eindhovensche Golf

2023-01-17T23:09:57+00:00January 17th, 2023|Video|

Kicking off with our film on Eindhovensche Golf, this was our first taste of golf in the Netherlands and, curiously, it’s the only club in The Netherlands without the word ‘club’ after its name. The history of Eindhovensche Golf is inseparably entwined with one of the great household names in electronics which was founded in the industrial city of Eindhoven in 1891: the Philips Company.  One of the co-founders, Anton Philips, along with his wife, Anna, had the inspiration to develop recreational and leisure facilities to attract prospective employees to their headquarters. Harry Shapland Colt was engaged to design [...]

Netherlands Tour Journal: Getting to Eindhoven

A continued blog piece to coincide with our filming releases in The Netherlands... in partnership with - Prelude - Rye Regular listeners of our podcast will know that a trip to the Netherlands to play golf has been a long term aspiration for the Cookie Jar Boys. In Sam’s case, it might be better described as a borderline unhealthy obsession, prompting more than the occasional outburst about how great it would be to see ‘The Old 9’ - the oldest clubs in the Netherlands, many of which were designed by the great H.S. Colt - soak in some Dutch culture, [...]

168 – Cees Collart – Sustainable Agronomy

2023-01-17T08:13:10+00:00January 17th, 2023|Podcasts|

Kicking off our first piece of content from our Netherlands Tour in October 2022 with Cees Collart, Chairman of Sustainable Golf at the R&A. Cees has spent much of his life around the game, spending time in England & Scotland as well as The Netherlands, now playing much of his golf at Eindhoven. Through some regular matches we have been friends with Cees for some time now, and getting to record a podcast with him about the work he is leading on sustainable agronomy was great fun. Really interesting stuff in here about turf types, turf management, and [...]

The 12 Hole Original Open Championship Course at Prestwick

2023-01-16T16:15:19+00:00January 16th, 2023|Video|

On the 17th October 1860, the first Open Championship was played. A 12 hole routing was in place at Prestwick in the early years thanks to old Tom Morris who moved to Ayrshire following his split from Allan Robertson in St Andrews. Willie Park Snr went on to win that first Open. The 12 hole routing as you will see is significantly different to the stereotypical 'out and back' links that many of the earliest clubs adopted. Holes of various lengths and shapes criss-cross around the course at Prestwick, with enormous amount of drama and challenge. Prestwick have put in [...]

Story of a Golf Club: Royal St. George’s – 1922 Open Championship

2023-01-16T16:12:17+00:00January 16th, 2023|Video|

A slight twist on our usual films, we wanted to share the story of the 1922 Open Championship at Royal St. George's. The Hagen win in 1922 ushered in a new era of American dominance in the professional game, with a gritty performance over his English and Scottish counterparts. Credit due to Tom Clavin's book 'Sir Walter, The flamboyant life of Walter Hagen', and in there he brilliantly describes the events as they unfolded with Bernard Darwin reporting from the fairways. Royal St. George's is a club steeped in history and one of the most significant clubs in the British [...]
