Blackwell Golf Club – 19th July, 2024

Our inaugural Cookie Jar Mixer was held at Blackwell in 2021, and we thought we would bring it back. A big day of golf in the summer, some fantastic food, drinks and much much more! A film from that day can be viewed below, including a wonderful impromptu poem delivered by James Woods, originally told at a game between the Honourable Company & Royal St George’s.

Much like many clubs of that era, Blackwell was founded by a group of local businessmen in 1893. John Ball Jr had won The Open Championship – the first Englishman to achieve such a feat – only three years earlier at Prestwick. In doing so he ignited an unprecedented level of interest in what was previously a fairly obscure Scottish sport, leading to the formation of many clubs around the country.

The club got going with a rudimentary 9 hole routing, and in 1923 Blackwell enrolled the services of Tom Simpson & Herbert Fowler to design a full 18 hole course. At the time H.S. Colt was almost certainly deemed to be too expensive, and Simpson was the man tasked with routing a course over 98 acres of fairly ordinary parkland south of Birmingham. What he achieved in Blackwell was exceptional and we are fortunate as a club to have such a small property, thus removing the ability to make radical changes ever since. As such, Blackwell is still able to boast 18 original Simpson greens and a routing which remains unchanged. Something very rare indeed.

We all play our golf at Blackwell, and – not surprisingly – we think it’s rather good, and we hope you like it just the same! Regardless, our events are ultimately about bringing together good people from around the world who share the same passion and enthusiasm for the game, and every event we put on we are amazed at the places people travel from, the way in which they make new friends and meet up again in the months that follow.

Cost of the event is £200 and includes all golf, food, prizes, entertainment and anything else we have up our sleeve!

Please note that in the event this is oversubscribed a ballot will be held to determine places!
