181 – Golf history fails with Simon Haines
Show Notes from Podcast w/ Simon Haines on some of the great golf history fails The genesis for this episode came on the 17th January. We had just released our first film from our series in The Netherlands, a homage to work of H.S Colt and his influence on the golfing landscape of Holland. Only 20 minutes after the film was published, Simon Haines - esteemed British golf course history expert - was in the WhatsApp’s suggesting the image we had used of Colt was indeed Vardon. Despite the immediate panic he assured us that this was a VERY common mistake and that only about 4 or 5 people in the world would be able to spot the difference as the imagery of Colt was so poorly categorised. She overcame sexism and prejudice, she challenged stereotypes, she influenced the women's game in a way like no one else, and set records which still stand today. Susan Cayleff is a pulitzer prize nominee who has dedicated endless time to researching and documenting Babe's career, and this podcast gives you some colour and context around the rich tapestry of her life. 042 – Cleeve Hill: Story of a Golf Club – #savegolfonthehill
To coincide with the launch of our latest ‘Story of a Golf Club’ YouTube film, we are joined by Golf Club Atlas contributor Sean Arble, and course architect Robin Hiseman who both share a special connection with Cleeve Hill. The course is planning to shut in March next year, as the council have deemed golf there as not being financially viable in today’s climate. This course is the epitome of golf in the Auk. Stunning, historic, fun and most of all accessible for golfers of all abilities and budgets! The story of Cleeve Hill is a sad one, but we hope, that Golf on the Hill can be saved for future generations!
039 – Bobby Jones 90th Anniversary Grand Slam special – Part 2
The second part of our special series on the life of Bobby Jones, winner of the Grand Slam in 1930 and arguably one of the most influential people in the world of golf, if not sport more generally. With Jones having won the UK leg of the grand slam at Royal Liverpool and St Andrews, we head over for the second half at Merion and Interlaachen. We also look at the legacy Bobby Jones has left on the game, including the Masters, designing Augusta with Mackenzie, and his affinity with the town of St Andrews!
